Trade and Investment

According to the 2010-2014 National Development Plan, action in matters of trade and investment will be focused on opening new markets and strengthening commercial relations with Colombia’s strategic partners through the diversification of its exportable goods and the enhancement of its competitive and productive capacities to attract foreign investment.

In matters of foreign policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers that trade and investment are fundamental to this country’s economic growth and sustainability. In fact, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a joint effort led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, has progressed in several negotiation processes and the signing of free trade agreements for the protection and promotion of investments, as well as double taxation agreements.

Likewise, Colombia attributes the greatest importance to progress and reinforcement in processes at the level of the Union of South American Nations - UNASUR, the Andean Community, the Meso-American Project and the Pacific Arch. Efforts will also be centered on closer relations with new trading partners, such as the eastern countries, referred to as BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and CIVETS (Colombia, India, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa).

Along the same lines, diversification of the agenda with traditional partners and allies, such as the United States, Canada and the European Union, is a Government priority. One fundamental goal will be the insertion of Colombia in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development as part of our commitment to good governance and sustainable development policies.

The main multi-lateral organizations and fora for negotiation at which the subjects of trade and investment are discussed and that are of interest to Colombia are:

1. World Trade Organization (WTO).

2. Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

3. United Nations conference on trade and development (UNCTAD).

4. United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
