RENOUNCEMENT OF COLOMBIAN NATIONALITY

II. How does one renounce Colombian Citizenship?

According to Law 43 of 1993, regulated by Decree 1869 of 1994 and amended by Law 962 of 2005, Colombian citizens shall have the right to renounce their nationality. To this end, the individual must file a written request before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Colombian Consulates abroad. Upon compliance with all the requirements and submission of the documents set forth in current legislation in force, a "renunciation certificate" shall be issued, certifying that a Colombian national has renounced his/her Colombian citizenship.

II Requirements and Documentation

  1. Written statement of the desire to relinquish Colombian nationality.

 

  1. Five (5) photographs, 4 x 5 centimeters, on blue background.

 

  1. Valid citizenship card and passport, or certified copy of the Colombian birth certificate for minors.

 

  1. Suitable document to proving that the individual holds or is requesting another nationality.  

 

  1. Certification of compliance with military status requirements established under prevailing Colombian law, unless such situation has been resolved in the country of the individual's other nationality, which must be proven by a certificate issued by the relevant foreign authority.

 

  1. Valid police certificate, issued by the Administrative Department of Security (Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad - DAS) for Colombians residing in the country.

 

  1. Valid Certificate of Good Conduct issued by the relevant authority for Colombians residing abroad.  If necessary, additional information may be requested from the Administrative Department of Security (Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad - DAS).

 

  1. Certification of compliance with military status requirements established under prevailing Colombian law, unless such situation has been resolved in the country of the individual's other nationality, which must be proven by a certificate issued by the relevant foreign authority.

 

  1. The Internal Working Group of Nationality of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or of the corresponding Consulate shall summon the applicant in order to notify him/her of the record renouncing the Colombian nationality.

 

III Fee

In Colombia: One hundred thousand pesos (COP $100,000), in accordance with Resolution 1670 of 15 April 2011, payable to the Revolving Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Fondo Rotatorio del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores), TIN (NIT) 860.511.071-6, at Citibank, checking account No. 0060703019. This amount shall be paid upon receipt of a notification sent to you in that regard by the Internal Working Group of Nationality or the corresponding Consulate.

Colombian Consulates in the Americas: Eighty U.S. dollars (USD $80).

Colombian Consulates in Europe: Fifty-five Euros (€ 55).

Colombian Consulates in Asia, Africa and Australia/Oceania: Eighty U.S. dollars (USD $80)
