Bilateral relations
Frente a la “Guerra de la Triple Alianza”, el Congreso colombiano expresó mediante la Ley 78/1870, su simpatía y admiración por la resistencia patriótica y heroica del pueblo paraguayo, Ley que se ha convertido en un símbolo de los estrechos lazos de hermandad entre nuestros pueblos.
Colombia and Paraguay have made significant progress in bilateral relations, especially with regard to co-operation in matters of civic security and the consolidation of relations between the two countries.
Issues on the binational agenda
Colombian and Paraguay have a Permanent Political Concertation and Consultation Mechanism, chaired by the Vice-Foreign Ministers, who provide follow-up to a bilateral agenda marked by the co-operation between the two countries in matters of education, development and population; the modernization of the State and productive development; civic security; energy management; the fight against the World Drugs Problem; consular affairs; air transport services; the prevention and investigation of crimes trafficking in persons; and assistance to and protection for victims.
Recent visits and meetings
- 29 de septiembre de 2015. Reunión entre los Presidentes Juan Manuel Santos y Horacio Cartes en el marco de la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas.
- 25 de marzo de 2015: Visita del Canciller Eladio Loizaga a Bogotá, durante la cual presidió la III Reunión del Mecanismo Permanente de Consultas y Concertación Política.
- 31 de octubre de 2014: Encuentro entre la Canciller colombiana María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar y el Canciller del Paraguay, Embajador Eladio Loizaga en el marco de la Reunión Informativa Ministerial de la Alianza del Pacífico y Mercosur en Cartagena de Indias.
- 6 August 2014. President Santos, the President of Paraguay, Horacio Manuel Cartes, the Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin and her Paraguayan colleague Eladio Loizaga held a meeting in the Casa de Nariño, Bogota. The Presidents held a dialogue on matters of the bilateral agenda, co-operation in areas of civic security, river and port matters, and issues of education and culture, amongst other things.
- 22 April 2014. Visit of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patti Londoño to Paraguay, on the occasion of the celebration of the II Meeting of the Colombia-Paraguay Permanent Political Concertation and Consultation Mechanism.
- 24 March 2014. Official visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Angela Holguin to Paraguay.
- 15 August 2013. Colombia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Angela Holguin attended the inaugural of Paraguay´s e President-elect Horacio Manuel Cartes Jara in Asunción, Paraguay.
- 4-6 July 2013. Meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, José Felix Fernández, during the OAS General Assembly, in Antigua, Guatemala.
