General Information
Diplomatic relations between Colombia and Ecuador commenced on February 10, 1832. The frontier between the two countries is 586 kilometers long and the respective border agreements are the Suárez - Muñoz Bernaza Treaty of July 15, 1916 and the Liévano - Lucio Convention of August 23, 1975. The diplomatic representations of both States are in their capital cities of Quito and Bogota D.C.
On November 26, 2010, within the framework of the UNASUR Summit in Guyana and to follow up the agreements set out in the “Road Map” agreed upon between the two countries in September 2009, Presidents Rafael Correa and Juan Manuel Santos announced full restoration of diplomatic relations and the early designation of their Ambassadors.
At present, relations with our sister Republic of Ecuador are through direct, frank dialogue, based on mutual respect and in full compliance with international law. According to the last meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, relations between the two countries will prioritize the channels agreed on with the recently structured Colombo-Ecuadorean Neighborliness Commission, recognizing it as the bilateral political and representative mechanism for the promotion of integration, cooperation and binational development and as an efficient expeditious tool for the formulation, implementation and follow-up of projects involving joint border interests. Likewise, integral joint efforts are under way in the border zone for the Colombian refugee population in Ecuador through a Binational Commission, which has established the bases for a Plan of Action. The Binational Border for Prosperity and Good Living Plan was presented recently, seeking to strengthen integration and social and economic development in the border zones through joint work on six focal points, i.e.: I): Environmental; II) Economic and productive; III) Social; IV) Innovation and technology; V) Infrastructure and VI) Risk management and response.
