Diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China were established in February 1980, and Colombia adhered to the principle of “one China.” Colombia has a diplomatic representation in Beijing and the People's Republic of China has an Embassy in Bogotá.
Recent meetings
- August 7, 2010. China’s Minister of Justice, Mrs. Wu Aiying attended the inauguration of President Juan Manuel Santos, as a Special Envoy of the government of China.
- September, 2010. Colonel General Liang Guanglie, Minister of Defense of the People's Republic of China and a member of the State Council dialogued with President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos and his Minister of Defense, Rodrigo Rivera. As a result, the Gratuitous Assistance Agreement from China to Colombia was signed. Through this Agreement the Asian nation donates approximately USD$1 million to purchase military logistic material.
- September, 2010. Visit of Mr. Huang Ping, Director General of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, and a delegation which included Mrs. An Xiaoru, Director of Legal Affairs of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the National Popular Assembly; Mr. Zhang Yuhua, Assistant Inspector of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the National Popular Assembly; Mrs. Huang Wei, Assistant Director of Administrative Law of the Standing Committee of the National Popular Assembly; Mr. Tong Xiuejun and Mr. Song Shiyou, First and Third Secretaries of the General Direction of Consular Affairs. The Chinese officers wished to learn about the Colombian migratory law experience because there is a bill being drafted in China on consular and migratory affairs.
- November, 2010. Mr. Zhong Shan, Vice Minister of Commerce of the Popular Republic of China visited Colombia with a delegation of 22 businessmen from eight Chinese agricultural, textile, clothes manufacturing, chemical and textile machinery companies. An Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement was signed, by which the Chinese government provides 10 million Yens to finance development programs in border zones.
- December, 2010. The High Commissioner of the Ministry of Supervision of the Popular Republic of China, Mr. Wu Yuliang visited the country and met with the Inspector General of Colombia to learn about Colombia’s Anti Corruption Program.
- December, 2010. Mrs. Liu Yandong, Counselor of the Council of State of the People's Republic of China visited the country at the end of the year. Mrs. Liu met with President Juan Manuel Santos and Vice president Angelino Garzón. The delegation included Mr. Xiang Zhaolun, General Undersecretary of the Council of State; Mr. Song Tao, Vice minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Hao Ping, Vice minister of Education; Mr. Cao Jianlin, Vice minister of Science and Technology; Mr. Zhang Shaochun, Vice minister of Finances; Mrs. Jiang Xiaojuan, General Assistant Director of the Office of Research of the State Council and 21 officers, some of them high ranking officers of the Council of State and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Science and Technology, Education and Finances. The main topic of discussion was innovation in science and technology and education. The 2011 – 2014 Bi-national Educational Plan was signed.
- ExpoShanghai. Colombia took part in Shanghai World Expo. There were many important opportunities for investment and exchange in the areas of infrastructure, innovation and education. Colombia donated the commemorative stamp designed in Colombia and an emerald replica of Haibao, the Expo mascot, to the Expo 2010 Museum.
