Human Rights

A Regional Conference to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights was held in Cartagena de Indias from 8 to 10 September 2008. It was attended by approximately 900 participants.

Bioethics

The Diccionario Latinoamericano de Bioética (Latin American Bioethics Dictionary) was launched on 29 April 2008.  The Executive Secretariat participated in this activity highlighting the importance of the dictionary since it is an intellectual, academic and scientific effort from all the countries of the region led by UNESCO Mexico acting as a delegate of the Bioethics Network during 2007.

The event “Workshop on Bioethics,” supported by the Organization, was held at Javeriana University on 17 July 2008. 

The Executive Secretariat of the Commission participated in the workshop “Towards the Consolidation of a National Council on Bioethics” (Hacia la Consolidación de un Consejo Nacional de Bioética) that was held on 20 and 21 April 2009. This event was organized by the National University of Colombia (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), during which research experiences were shared and the advances of UNESCO Montevideo were explained with the objective of searching for strategies and short-term projects to promote the region.

The Intersectoral Commission on Bioethics (Comisión Intersectorial de BioéticaCIB): the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO convened, on several occasions, the government entities that belong to the Intersectoral Commission on Bioethics. The objective was to design a strategy for the participation of Colombia in the Intergovernmental Bioethics Community it belongs to until 2011. As a result of this announcement, both the consultation process and the formulation of Law 1374 of January 8, 2010, through which the National Council of Bioethics is created and other provisions are stipulated, began.

Youth Issues

The “Best Practices in Adolescent Policies and Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean” Project: organizations from the civil society and government entities from Colombia took part in this project led by UNESCO along with the Inter-American Development Bank.

Furthermore, the Young People with Companies – Promotion of entrepreneurship among Colombian young people (Jóvenes con Empresa - Promoción de la Empresarialidad entre los Jóvenes Colombianos) - (Agreement IDB ATN/MH-8618 – CO) from the Caja de Compensación Familiar de Antioquia – CONFAMA was highly commended.
